Xixi Wetland · 西溪湿地 · Water Lanes, Not Open Water

💡The rowing boat is charged by the hour, so settle the numbers on the pier：The hand-rowed boat is what Xixi is actually known for — it is slower than the electric boat and can turn into the narrower lanes the scheduled route never enters. But it is chartered by the boat and by the hour, not sold per seat, which changes how you should approach it. Confirm the duration and the total before you board, not after, and note that a boat seating roughly six splits well across a group. If you are two people on a budget, the electric boat is the honest answer; if you are four or more, the rowing boat is both better and reasonable per head.

💡In Hangzhou the season decides what you actually see, not just how it feels：Most cities have a comfortable season and an uncomfortable one. Hangzhou is different: the season changes what physically exists. Late March to April is the Longjing picking season — the only window in which you can watch tea being picked and pan-fired and drink that year's first flush. Summer brings lotus on the lake and heat with it, plus mosquitoes in the Xixi reeds. Autumn through early winter is when the reed flats at Xixi turn white, the classic scene there, and is also the most comfortable walking weather along with spring. Winter snow on Broken Bridge is the most famous image of the lake and also the least reliable — it needs snow that Hangzhou does not get every year. So pick your dates around the one thing you most want to see, and treat the rest as a bonus.

💡These five sit in three different directions — do not try to do them in one day：Hangzhou's sights are often listed as if they were all "around West Lake", which produces badly broken itineraries. In practice they fall into three groups. On the lake itself: the shoreline loop and Leifeng Pagoda, which sits on the southern shore and is reachable on foot or by shared bike from Su Causeway — these two genuinely combine into one day. In the western hills: Lingyin Temple and the Longjing tea villages, roughly 6–10 km west and southwest of the lake with no direct metro; they share the same direction and can be paired in one day if you start early. West of the city: Xixi Wetland, about 5 km away in a different direction again, which wants a half day of its own. A realistic Hangzhou plan is therefore two full days minimum for the lake plus one hill day, with Xixi added only if you have a third.

💡Enter the east zone at Zhoujiacun：Both the hand-rowed and the electric boats leave from Zhoujiacun, which is the east zone's main entrance, so that is the point to navigate to if a boat is part of your plan. This is worth stating plainly because "Xixi Wetland" as a map search can land you at a west-zone entrance several kilometres away, on the wrong side of a park you have already bought a ticket for.

💡Mix boat and walking — a boat alone misses half the park：It is tempting to treat Xixi as a boat ride, but the water lanes and the shore sights are different halves of the same place: the boat gives you the reeds at eye level, the paths give you the villages, the temple and the reed flats. The efficient pattern is to row one stretch, get off, walk, and take the scheduled electric boat back to the main pier so you are not retracing your own steps on tired legs.

💡In-park food is priced as in-park food, and the city is minutes away：Restaurants inside the wetland carry the usual captive-audience pricing. The difference here is that the alternative is unusually close: downtown Hangzhou is only ten-odd minutes by car, and the Xixi Paradise cluster sits immediately outside the gate. Treat in-park food as refuelling and keep the proper meal for one of those.
