⚠️Ice and Snow World and the Sun Island snow expo are two separate parks：This is the mistake visitors make most often in Harbin. Ice and Snow World is carved from blocks of river ice, lit from inside by coloured LEDs, and is therefore best after dark. The Sun Island Snow Sculpture Expo is carved from packed snow, which is white and reads only by natural light, so it is best in daylight. They sit on the same north bank of the Songhua but are kilometres apart, and they are ticketed entirely separately — neither ticket admits you to the other. If you have the time, the efficient plan is snow by day and ice by night; if you only have one slot, decide which medium you actually came for.

⚠️Snow carving needs sun, so keep this one flexible in the itinerary：Because snow reads by shadow rather than by internal light, a clear morning or a raking late-afternoon sun is what gives the sculptures depth. On an overcast day the whole park flattens to grey and the fine carving largely disappears. If your trip has several days in it, treat the expo as the item you slide to whichever day has the better forecast — that single scheduling choice affects the experience more than the ticket type does.

⚠️Walking across the frozen Songhua: only on marked, compacted routes：From around January the Songhua freezes solid enough that locals walk and sled across it, and crossing on foot from the north end of Central Street is one of Harbin's most distinctive winter experiences — roughly 20–30 minutes. Two conditions matter. Only use routes that are signposted and visibly compacted by traffic; never probe an unopened stretch of ice on your own. And ice thickness declines towards the end of the season — from around late February, stop treating the river as a walking surface and take the cable car or a taxi instead. With children, older travellers, or on an icy day, take the cable car regardless.

⚠️Two of these five only exist in winter, and the dates are not fixed：Ice and Snow World and the Sun Island snow expo are seasonal builds — they are constructed each winter and run roughly from late December to late February, with the exact opening and closing dates set by that year's weather and often announced only weeks ahead. Mid-January is the most dependable window. Central Street, Saint Sophia Cathedral and the Siberian Tiger Park are open year-round, so a summer trip to Harbin is a real option — just a completely different one, with riverside beer gardens instead of ice castles. The practical consequence: do not commit to non-refundable flights or non-changeable hotels for an ice-focused trip before the official dates are published.

⚠️The crossing is part of the attraction — treat it with the same care：Walking over the Songhua from the north end of Central Street is one of Harbin's signature winter experiences, and it is free. It is also the only item in this city cluster with a real physical risk attached, which is why the rule is simple and not negotiable: marked and compacted routes only, and not at all once the ice starts thinning towards the end of the season. The cable car exists for exactly the days and companions where walking is not the right call.

⚠️Dress for the real temperature, and treat warming up as part of the itinerary：January in Harbin averages well below −15 °C and can reach around −30 °C. What that requires is specific: a long down parka, thermal base layers, insulated non-slip boots, a hat that covers the ears and touchscreen gloves. A city winter coat is not enough. With wind at these temperatures, exposed skin can be damaged in a short time — if a patch of skin goes numb, go indoors immediately. Phone batteries also fail within minutes outdoors, so keep a power bank in an inside pocket and the phone against your body. Locals do not stay outside continuously: plan a warm-up stop every 60–90 minutes at a café, heated room or underground shopping street. That is standard practice here, not fragility.
