1Highlights
Zhongshan Road is Xiamen's treaty-port commercial street: a continuous arcaded colonnade that shelters you from both sun and rain and runs all the way down to the Lujiang Road waterfront, with Gulangyu lit up across the channel. The facades are worth looking at by day and considerably better after dark. Behind it sits Bashi โ the Eighth Market โ which is not a visitor attraction but the market where people in the old town buy their fish, and its early-morning seafood stalls and Minnan snack counters are the most unvarnished thing in the city. Both cost nothing. The two have opposite clocks, which is the single most useful thing to know here: Bashi is effectively finished by ten in the morning, and Zhongshan Road does not come into its own until the lights go on.

2Tickets
There is nothing to buy here but food and souvenirs โ the arcades, the market and the waterfront are all free and open. The money question at Bashi is not admission but pricing: anything sold by the jin needs the species and the per-jin price agreed before it goes on the scales, and some stalls will cook what you buy for a separate fee that is also worth asking about first.
| Zhongshan Road arcades | Free | All day. Zhenbang Road and Mao Street nearby are the same โ open arcade streets, no tickets. |
|---|---|---|
| Bashi (Eighth Market) | Free | A working market, liveliest 07:00โ09:00. You pay only for what you buy. |
| Lujiang Road waterfront | Free | The promenade facing Gulangyu โ the best free night view in the old town. |
| Seafood at Bashi, by weight | ยฅ20โ100 pp | Agree species and price per jin before weighing; ask the cooking fee separately. |
How to buy seafood without a dispute๏ผThree questions, asked in this order and before anything is weighed: what species is it, what is the price per jin, and what is the cooking fee if a stall or nearby shop is going to prepare it. Nearly every market seafood complaint in China comes from one of those three being settled after the fact rather than before. A note on payment: most stalls work on WeChat Pay or Alipay, and the smaller ones may not take cards at all.
Buy specialities away from the main street๏ผSouvenir shops on the Zhongshan Road frontage are priced for footfall. The same pastries, dried seafood and tea are cheaper from established local brands, from Bashi, or from a supermarket โ and the side lanes off Zhongshan Road are a short walk, not a detour.
3Getting There
Zhongshan Road is in the heart of the old town, walkable from Metro Line 1's Zhenhai Road station; Bashi is immediately north of the street, under ten minutes on foot. The Cruise Centre terminal for the Gulangyu ferry is about ten minutes by taxi, which is the practical reason so many visitors base themselves here.

Decline the touts around the piers๏ผThe area between Zhongshan Road and the ferry terminals attracts unlicensed taxis, cut-price 'island day tours' and cheap sailing-trip offers. Ferry tickets to Gulangyu exist only in the official named booking system, so nobody on the street can sell you one, and a low headline price for a boat trip is usually the start of a longer bill. Use a metered taxi or a ride-hailing app.
4Route & Photos
Two separate uses of the same few streets, and it is worth doing both rather than trying to merge them. Morning: Bashi market, then peanut soup and satay noodles at an old shop, then the arcades in daylight. Evening: Zhongshan Road once the facades are lit, then down to the Lujiang Road waterfront for Gulangyu's night lights across the channel.
Bashi is a morning-only proposition๏ผThe buzz is 07:00 to 09:00. After ten the seafood stalls start packing up and by late morning you are walking through a market that has finished its day. There is no afternoon version of this, so if Bashi is the reason you came to this part of town, it has to be the first thing you do.
Recommended Route
- 1
Bashi morning market
Seafood stalls, dried goods and snack counters at full volume. Come at seven, not at ten.
- 2
Peanut soup and satay noodles
Breakfast at one of the old shops in and around the market. Join whichever queue is made of locals.
- 3
The arcades by day
Walk the colonnade toward the sea and look up โ the upper facades are the part nobody photographs.
- 4
The side lanes
Zhenbang Road, Mao Street and the small lanes off the main street, where the food is better and cheaper.
- 5
Lujiang Road at night
The waterfront with Gulangyu lit across the water, and the arcades behind you lit too. The right ending.
Best Photo Spots

The lit arcade facades down the length of the street โ shoot from the middle of the roadway looking seaward.

5Food & Stay
| Bashi marketSeafood and Minnan snacks | ยฅ20โ100 pp | The locals' market. Agree per-jin prices first; most stalls take WeChat or Alipay only. |
|---|---|---|
| Old shops off Zhongshan RoadPeanut soup, satay noodles, oyster omelette | ยฅ10โ40 each | Follow the local queues rather than the signage. |
Eat one street in from the arcade๏ผThe main-street frontage is priced for passing trade. One turn into the side lanes or into Bashi gets you the same Minnan snacks made better and sold for less โ and this is the district where that gap is widest, because the footfall on the arcade is so heavy.
Where to Stay
- Zhongshan Road / Lujiang Road, ยฅ180โ400/night โ chain hotels at the best value in the city, with food on the doorstep and the Gulangyu ferry terminal ten minutes away. For most visitors this is the right base, and it is the reason to read this page even if the arcades are not your priority.
6Tips & Pitfalls
- Bashi at seven, Zhongshan Road after dark. Trying to do both in one visit at midday gets you the worst version of each.
- Agree the species, the per-jin price and the cooking fee before anything is weighed. All three, in that order, every time.
- Carry a working mobile payment method. Market stalls are overwhelmingly WeChat Pay and Alipay; the small ones may take nothing else.
- Buy specialities in the lanes, at an old brand or in a supermarket. The main-street souvenir shops carry a location premium on identical goods.
- Stay here if you are doing Gulangyu. Ten minutes to the terminal matters on a morning when you have a timed, named ferry booking you cannot rebook at the pier.
7Frequently Asked Questions
Does Zhongshan Road charge admission?
No. The arcaded pedestrian street, Bashi market and the Lujiang Road waterfront are all free and open, as are the neighbouring arcade streets like Zhenbang Road. You only spend on food and shopping.
When should I go to Bashi?
07:00 to 09:00. Many seafood stalls begin packing up after 10:00, and by late morning the market has finished for the day. There is no afternoon equivalent, so make it the first thing you do.
Can I have Bashi seafood cooked for me?
Yes โ some stalls and nearby shops will prepare what you buy for a fee. Ask the species, the price per jin and the cooking fee together, before buying, and expect to pay by WeChat Pay or Alipay rather than card.
How do I get there?
Metro Line 1 to Zhenhai Road station and walk into the arcades; Bashi is just north of the street, under ten minutes on foot. The Gulangyu ferry terminal at the Cruise Centre is about ten minutes by taxi.
Is this a good area to stay in?
Yes, and for most visitors it is the right choice: good-value chain hotels at ยฅ180โ400, food on the doorstep, and ten minutes to the Gulangyu ferry terminal โ which matters because the ferry is a timed, named booking that cannot be changed at the pier.
