Entry is 100% reservation-only โ no walk-up tickets exist. In peak season (AprโOct), tickets open 7 days ahead and routinely sell out within minutes. You must book via the official WeChat mini-program or the Palace Museum website.

3Getting There
The only entrance is the Meridian Gate (Wumen, south). The exits are the Gate of Divine Might (Shenwumen, north) or East Prosperity Gate (Donghuamen, east).
Tian'anmen East station, Exit B. 5 min walk
Tian'anmen West station, Exit B. 8 min walk
Cannot reach the Meridian Gate directly. Closest drop: Donghuamen or Xihuamen, 10 min walk
Security route๏ผWith a Forbidden City ticket you can pass through the Tian'anmen Square security checkpoint (no separate Square reservation needed). From Tian'anmen East metro Exit B โ security screening (10โ30 min queue, passport required) โ walk through Tian'anmen gate โ Duanmen โ Meridian Gate ticket check. Allow 30 min off-peak, 60 min peak.
Luggage storage๏ผThe Meridian Gate entrance has free luggage storage. Your bags are transported to the North Gate (Shenwumen) exit. Pick them up at the end of your visit with your claim tag โ no need to return to the south gate. Rolling suitcases must be checked (cobblestone floors are hell on wheels). Backpacks are fine.
4Route & Photos
This route covers the central axis + West Palaces + newly popular areas (Yanxi Palace + Cining Palace). ~5โ6 km on foot, 4โ5 hours. If you're short on time: just the central axis (Meridian Gate โ Hall of Supreme Harmony โ Qianqing Palace โ Imperial Garden โ North Gate) is ~2 hours.
Rent the auto-guide device (ยฅ20, multi-language including English) at the Meridian Gate โ GPS-triggered commentary that plays as you walk. Far more flexible than a tour group.

6Tips & Pitfalls
- ๐ซ Ticketing window: 20:00 daily, 7 days ahead. Register your account and passport details in advance. Peak-season tickets can sell out by 20:01.
- ๐ Carry your passport at all times. Tian'anmen security and palace entry both require passport verification. No passport = no entry, no exceptions.
- ๐ณ Payment setup: Palace food and gift shops accept WeChat Pay / Alipay (link your overseas Visa/Mastercard before departure). Some counters take cash. Carry ยฅ200 cash as backup.
- ๐ถ Wear your most comfortable shoes. 5โ6 km of cobblestone โ heels or new shoes will destroy your day.
- ๐งข It's outdoors. Most areas have zero shade โ hat, sunscreen and water in summer; thickest coat in winter (Beijing hits -10ยฐC with wind tunnels through the courtyards).
- ๐ Enter at opening (8:30). After 9:30 the tour groups flood in and Taihe Square becomes a sea of people. The first hour is the palace as it should be.
- ๐ Power bank essential. 4โ6 hours of constant photos and maps โ your battery will not survive.
- ๐ป Toilets on east and west sides only. None on the central axis. Go when you see a sign.

How far in advance should I book Forbidden City tickets?
Tickets are released daily at 20:00 Beijing time for the date 7 days ahead. In peak season (AprilโOctober) they can sell out within minutes, so set an alarm and book the moment the window opens. There are no walk-up tickets โ if you arrive without a reservation you will not get in.
