All hutong areas are completely free โ open city streets. No tickets, no reservations. Walk in anytime. Drum Tower (ยฅ20) and Bell Tower (ยฅ15) have entry fees (both closed Mondays).

Nanluoguxiang station, Exit E
South or north entrance
Shared bikes๏ผPlenty at the metro exit. Nanluoguxiang main street bans cycling (pedestrian only). Wider side alleys are rideable. Narrow hutongs (Mao'er Hutong, Baochao Hutong are 3โ4m at narrowest) are not suitable for cycling โ tight passing and sudden doors opening. Beiluoguxiang is fine for bikes. Best advice: walk. The hutong's rhythm requires feet.
Rickshaw (pedicab) scams๏ผDozens of unlicensed rickshaw operators around Shichahai and Nanluoguxiang target foreign tourists. No fixed price โ ยฅ100โ300/person is the standard shout. If you must: write down the agreed price + duration + route before getting in, and photograph the driver and plate number. Fair price: ยฅ80โ120/person for ~40 min. Any 'I'll show you the real old Beijing' for suspiciously cheap โ is a shopping-trap detour. Safest option: don't take one. Walking is the correct form.
