Tongli Water Town

💡Decide what you came for before you buy：This is the one decision that determines whether Tongli feels good value. If you want the canal-town atmosphere — bridges, water, lanes, a boat, tea — you can have all of that for free plus the boat fare, because the streets have no gate. If you want Tuisi Garden, which is the reason the town is on a World Heritage list and genuinely worth seeing, you need the combo ticket. What wastes money is buying the combo and then spending the day wandering lanes you could have walked for nothing, or skipping it and then discovering the garden was the thing you actually wanted.

💡Agree the boat terms before boarding：Tongli's rowing boats thread the canals with houses built over the water on both sides, and they are the most characteristic thing you can do here. They are priced on site, per boat or per person depending on the operator. Settle which it is, which route the boat takes, and how long it runs before you step on. Splitting a boat between several people is the normal way to make the price reasonable.

💡These five fall into three rings — the northeast trio really is walkable, Tongli really is not：Suzhou's sights get listed as if they were all "in the old town", which produces badly broken days. In practice there are three rings. The northeast walking trio: the Humble Administrator's Garden, the Suzhou Museum and Pingjiang Road sit within about ten minutes of each other on foot — this is the most efficient cluster in the city and genuinely works as one half to full day. The northwest: the Lingering Garden is on the other side of the old town, best paired with Shantang Street rather than squeezed onto the northeast day. Outside the city: Tongli is roughly 25 km southeast, about a 40-minute drive, and wants a half day of its own at minimum. A realistic plan is therefore one old-town day for the northeast trio, a second for the Lingering Garden and the west, and Tongli only if you have a third slot — or an overnight in the water town.

💡Plan around the plum rains and the humid summer：Suzhou sits in the Jiangnan monsoon belt. Roughly June into early July is the plum-rain season — long spells of drizzle that make the stone lanes and garden walkways slippery and can wash out a photography day. July and August are hot and humid, which is when the lotus in the gardens is at its best but also when midday is least pleasant. Spring and autumn are the comfortable windows and therefore the crowded ones. Whatever the month, carry a light rain layer and shoes with grip rather than smooth soles.

💡Stay a night if your itinerary can absorb it：Tongli's day visitors arrive and leave inside a fairly predictable window, which means the empty lanes at dawn and after dark are a different town from the one the coaches see. Sleeping over the water is the single change that most improves a visit here, and rooms in the old town are generally not expensive. If you can only come for the day, aim to be there early rather than mid-morning, and stay until the light goes rather than leaving after lunch.

💡Garden first, lanes afterwards：Tuisi Garden is the one thing here with an opening schedule and a queue, and it is quieter earlier, so it goes first. Afterwards the bridges and lanes are yours at whatever pace you like, since they have no hours at all — and a boat at dusk, when the lights come on, is the natural way to close the day. Doing it in the opposite order means reaching the garden at its busiest and possibly against its closing time.

💡Try the local pastries before booking a big meal：Tongli's two specialities — a flaky sock-sole pastry and the green qingtuan — are cheap, easy to find and more distinctive than most of what the canal-side restaurants serve. The restaurants have the positions and the prices that go with them. Grazing on snacks and putting the money into a canal-side teahouse hour is generally the better trade here, especially if you are staying over and will eat properly in the evening.
