Route overview
Chongqing is the only major Chinese city where the topography is the attraction. Built on a narrow ridge between two rivers, it stacks roads, rail and buildings on top of each other in a way that produces the genuinely disorienting effects the city is now famous for โ a monorail through a residential tower, exits that put you eight floors above where you entered. That means a Chongqing itinerary has to be organised vertically and by time of day rather than by district, because the same viewpoint is ordinary at noon and extraordinary at dusk. Day 1 stays in the Jiefangbei core and ends at Hongya Cave after the lights come on, which is the only time it is worth seeing. Day 2 is the transport day โ the Yangtze cableway, the Liziba monorail, Eling and a mountain path โ and is essentially a day of being moved through the city's cross-section. Day 3 steps back for the old town at Ciqikou and finishes on Nanshan looking at the whole thing from outside.

Metro Line 1/2 to Jiaochangkou. A WWII victory monument in a skyscraper canyon. 5 min photo, the food is the real draw.

Monorail Line 2. The train goes through floors 6-8 of an apartment building. Viewing platform faces the "mouth." Trains every 3-5 min.

Republican banknote factory turned creative park. Rooftop (ยฅ19) overlooks the whole Yuzhong Peninsula like a docked ship. 1.5h.

Any neighborhood joint with locals queuing. Pang Mei or Tikan. Order wandou mian, "wei la" (mild). ยฅ10-18.

Before you go
Ignore horizontal distance on the map. Two points 300 metres apart can be separated by 60 vertical metres and no direct route. Always check whether there is a lift, escalator or stair chain before you commit to walking.
Hongya Cave is an after-dark stop, full stop. Day 1 is ordered to put you there when the facade is lit; going in daylight is the most common way visitors come away wondering what the fuss was about.
The cableway is the queue on this route. It is short, popular and has limited capacity, so Day 2 starts with it rather than fitting it in later.
Chongqing hotpot is hotter than Chengdu's, not just spicier. If you are working up to it, eat in Chengdu first โ and ask for a split pot here rather than assuming you can order around it.

FAQ
Is 3 days enough for Chongqing?
Yes. Chongqing's core sights are compressed into a small area and the appeal is the city's structure rather than a long list of monuments, so three days covers it comfortably. A fourth day is only worth it if you are heading on to the Yangtze cruise or Dazu.
Chengdu or Chongqing โ if I only have time for one?
They are opposites, so it depends on what you want. Chengdu is slow, flat, teahouse-paced and has pandas. Chongqing is vertical, dense and visually extreme. If you want to relax, Chengdu; if you want to be startled, Chongqing. They are 1.5 hours apart by rail, so doing both is also easy.
Is the Liziba monorail worth going out of the way for?
It is on Day 2 because it is on the way, not because it deserves a detour on its own. The train passing through a residential building takes about fifteen seconds to watch. Treat it as one stop in a day about the city's vertical structure and it is worthwhile; treat it as a destination and it will disappoint.
Where should I stay?
Near Jiefangbei or across at Nanbin Road. Both put you within short reach of Day 1 and Day 2's starting points, and the river views are the reason to be here. Staying further out costs you more than it looks like on a map, because vertical separation makes short trips slow.
