Guilin is the reason so many people picture China as misty limestone peaks rising out of still water. The old Chinese saying goes: "Guilin's scenery is the finest under heaven." This is not a city you come to for museums or nightlife — you come to drift down the Li River, cycle between rice paddies in Yangshuo, and watch cormorant fishermen at dusk. Base yourself in Yangshuo (a 1-hour bus from Guilin) rather than Guilin city itself: the scenery is better, the pace is slower, and it is far more traveller-friendly.

- ▸Stay in Yangshuo, not Guilin city — better scenery, cheaper, more walkable, English widely spoken.
- ▸The Li River cruise sells out in peak season — book as soon as your date is fixed, via your hotel or a booking platform.
- ▸The Yulong River raft is a different experience from the big Li River boat — quieter and at water level, not a cheaper substitute.
- ▸Bring rain gear April-June — this is the wet season and mist is part of the magic.
- ▸High-speed rail: Guangzhou 2.5h, Shenzhen 3h, Shanghai 8h. The airport also has direct international flights.
- ▸Yangshuo West Street is very touristy — walk 10 minutes out and it becomes farmland immediately.

- Guilin → Yangshuo
Direct bus from Guilin train station, ~1h 20m, ¥30. High-speed rail to Yangshuo station takes 30 min.
- Bike & e-bike
The default way to explore Yangshuo. ¥30-60/day, widely available on West Street.
- Scooter/private driver
For Longji terraces or scattered viewpoints, hiring a driver for the day (¥300-500) is the sane option.
- Ride-hailing
DiDi works in Guilin and Yangshuo, but coverage thins out in the countryside.
